Brief
The brief required us to explore and analyse local food experiences and synthesize the design characteristics of food-led design in Naarm / Melbourne. With a selected type of food-led experience, we should begin a six-week research and eventually produce a โ€œleave behindโ€ to summarize and react to our observations of that experiences. Leave behind is an object produced at the end of a project to synthesize information and insights. It aims to arouse the interest of others in the food-led experience and to leave bread-crumb trails that lead to further discovery of what has been researched.
SOLUTION
We were curious about the cultural context of solo dining in Naarm, and how this compares to other cities around the world; how is Naarm better or worse at catering to different types of solo diners? Using our original quadrant framework based on the Pine and Gilmore Experience Realm Model (1999), we tested and categorized establishments across the city, and developed the Solo Dining Experience Quadrant. We produced a pocket-sized booklet with an interactive map and #TableForOne badge to advocate why solo dining should exist as a necessary act of self-care, and to encourage Melburnians to enjoy dining alone.
